candide - voltaire (theo cuffe or henry morley translation)
95 pages or so of story plus footnotes, which are easy and helpful if you keep the chapters marked in the back as you go. three to four page chapters and translated very favorably for a modern reader. a lot happens in very little text and it's both pretty easy to understand and a bold philosophical text that's withstood time
