So what books do I need to read before reading modern and postmodern literature?

I assume The Bible, Homer, Shakespeare (all of it), and Plato are mandatory but anything else?

I'd say a good precursor to start without would be Foucault. He's been labelled as postmodernist, though much of of his original work began well before the movement, and he personally rejected that label.
