This is somewhat of a myth. Read into it. He had planned out a lot of it and actually wrote at least one short first draft/outline in Joual (North American working class dialect of French that he grew up speaking)

Go for it. On the Road is fun to read. So is The Dharma Bums (preferred the latter actually). Of course it's all a little bit of a false "rebel without a cause" aesthetic that is a dead end, but it's fun and has had a lot of play in the US and gives you a good in on an interesting frame of mind/way of life. There are also hilarious interviews of him while he's drunk if you ever want to remind yourself that his lifestyle will turn you into a foolish dick.
