I am writing a fictional short story. Except I don't know if it should be a short story or a novel.

My idea for it is pretty much a dystopian world where the green movement was fully accepted. A world where people are taxed for living, where they are taxed and punished for exhaling carbon dioxide. It's pretty much a world where the concept of maximizing the longevity of the human race for as long as possible.

Any help?

Picture not related.

it sounds pretty fucking stupid.

Write the short story first. If you still think this is a good idea and think you can handle writing hundreds more pages about it, expand it into a novel.

Going straight to a novel will not end well, I suspect.

I think stories about dystopian societies are getting old.

I think this could be novella material really.

I like this idea. I am going to steal it from you OP

Unless the OP has written several short stories and a novella before, he should find out if he was the writing discipline by making this a short story first.

I was under the impression that OP was writing about a Carbon Fairy and I have no idea why.

It depends. If your ideas are broad and will not be at least 10 or 15 pages, then might as well just go all out.
