Well - Matthew McIntosh
Stay Up With Me - Tom Barbash

Both contain several different stories. After reading them I felt empty in a good way. They were both very grounded and real.

Also, this:

OP said good.

A few by Dostoevsky such as 'Notes from the Underground' and 'White Nights'.

I'd also recommend 'The Tartar Steppe' as well.

OP, I just read Notes and while I can appreciate it as a classic it didn't tug any emotional strings. The protag gets what he deserves. Don't waste your time if you're only trying to feel something.

My older brother is friends with Tom Barbash. I've met him twice. True gentleman, v. cool.

Seriously? What could you tell me about him, if anything? I know he's a professor in NY and that's about it

>>4391945

The last I heard, he was teaching in the Bay Area. Had no idea that he was in NYC.

Not too much to tell, really. Just a very pleasant guy. Nice family. Showed a genuine interest in other people. No pretense at all.

I'm writing something you'll probably find very uplifting, anon. It's a horror novel about a medieval kid who saves the day using his abilities to be a creepy loner who likes walking around in the dark.

book of disquiet

now, are there any books that show a character bringing himself out of his loneliness? like, by actually meeting people rather than just philosophising away his need for people? preferably something that isn't written by/for teenagers?

>> No.4393704

>>4393688
Maybe Steppenwolf?

It wasn't written for teenagers, but they're definitely the main readers.

Fernando Pessoa's The Book of Disquiet sums it up pretty nicely...
