>“audience pussy.” That’s the brutal phrase that surfaces in DT Max’s recent biography of Wallace, Every Love Story Is a Ghost Story, along with a series of similar anecdotes

>He refers to the women he sleeps with as the “bimbo brigade.”

>He takes full advantage of the “audience pussy” that becomes available to him after the publication of Infinite Jest; telling Jonathan Franzen he wonders whether his only purpose is “to put [his] penis in as many vaginas as possible.” He dismisses one woman he’s slept with by telling her, “I told you not to come here,” as she approaches him after a reading, and refers to another one (“unchivalrously,” Max notes) as “A three-day weekend I’m still paying the credit card bill on.” In New Orleans, he sleeps with a fan who is “underage,” though whether this means someone who is under 21, or under 18, or under 17 (the age of consent in Louisiana) is unclear. He tells one single mother he’s dating that he is jealous “her breasts [are] ‘no longer public property.’” He sleeps with his graduate students. He sleeps with his undergrads.

I'm attempting to demonstrate that you can learn an immense amount about the american economic "system" of contradictory individualism-corporatism through its generation approach to pornography

the 1990s seems to me to be a terrible nightmare with very confusing pornography compared to the preceding decades

interestingly, in the 2000s the pornography industry basically collapses under the weight of the internet and the sense of "hyper reality" that was present in the late 80s and most of the 90s vanishes into a kind of post-hyperreality. I can't really describe it.

Does that make sense? am I just a lecturer? Is it easy to make fun of what I'm saying? I can hear a voice... in my head... making fun of this paradox i'm trying to describe.

pornography from the 2000s basically devolves into spectacle. I think it might not be unreasonable to describe the 1990s as the last decade in which pornography actually conveyed any sense of a person- no matter how hyperreal.

I'm more interested in the psychology of pornography. Now that it is being mass produced on a level unlike before and it is all free, essentially.

I want to examine the mentalities of modern performers and see how they're holding up ten, twenty years down the road.

I also want to examine what habitual viewing of pornography and the infinite availability of it is doing to viewers. Part of me is wonders if it is deteriorating minds and another part of me wonders if it is causing our views on sexuality to evolve, morph, mutate, etc. at an exponential rate.

However, I haven't really formulated any complete thoughts on the subject quite yet. Unlike you anon.

By the late 2007s, the pornographic industry seems to have become so post-real that it actually fails to convey any feelings at all.

pornography from earlier eras might convey a sense of a desire for power and control and unattainability, fantasy, youth, innocence, experience, desire...

By the second decade of the 21st century the subject matter has become completely devoid of meaning. The post-real era crystallizes as a structural phenomena that will last forever.

I cannot predict the impact of the ubiquity of pornography or sex as spectacle on the modern condition. although, we have been living under the post-hyper real condition for over a decade now and it seems to show no sign of vanishing. Interesting point considering the mass production "amatuer" movement which in a way could be described as a reaction to the hyperreal consumerism pornography of the 1990s. On the other hand, that movement seems to have itself become coopted and is now essentially an exploration of fetishiziations and power relationships.

If you want to see how the proliferation of pornography has affected the modern psyche, look no further than this website. There is surely no larger collection of chronic masturbators and porn connoisseurs on Earth than here on 4chan.

Do you think it's a coincidence that the posters here don't even regard women as being fully human? That opinions about all women being manipulative whores, about all women being stupid and naturally inferior, are not only accepted but are by and large the norm? That even the faintest hint of compassion toward or sympathy for women is met with endless caterwauling and vitriol? It does make me sad. Men and women have disastrously established their sexual exchange as a political dynamic. Sex is now a power relationship which means it must be purchased, traded for, fought over and secured by guile, deception and conflict. The result is the modern condition in which those without the prerequisite social-political skills and resources for engaging in the sexual conflict find themselves ostracized.
This is a very worrying situation.

However, wouldn't you agree that such a dynamic isn't sustainable? I feel like there are two paths, that at some point men and women will either revert to a more symbiotic relationship that is akin to the traditional ideals of sex being an act of passion and compassion for one's partner or sex will lose its power entirely and people will view sex entirely as an act of recreation and partners will be interchangeable, everyone will engage in sexual activity, and there will be no exclusion as it'll just be another piece social engagement. You can do it with whoever, wherever, whenever, it's all about feeling good.

I'm hoping we revert to be honest.

I'm not nearly as keyed into the second decade of this century as I should be, which is why I browse 4chan, but my expectation is that women will find themselves commodified as sexual objects basically forever, and men will find themselves increasingly incapable of living up to the post-hyperreal standards they are required to maintain to engage in conflict for women. the result will mean women's indefinite immobilization in the media and society as sexual objects and man's ongoing retreat into the virtual world where control requires less resource intensive conflict than the sexual political battle.

No because men will have sex with everyone so women are free to have sex with the best without ever running out of supply. Hence whales having standards thinking they deserve a CEO with a 9 inch dink. The reason for that is because women secure short-term sex from much much more desirable men than they are themselves. Every chubby girl that is probably uglier than you are can get laid with a good looking man anytime. The problem is they won't be able to secure any meaningful relationship with the man in question over the long-term. The fact that she gets essentially used as a cumbucket by desirable men leads her to believe she deserves that kind of standard full-time. That is why women proclaim "all men are asshole", because they only define the very top of males as "men", and of course those men have much better options available at a whim and treat the majority of women who fall beneath that standard as disposable.

Independents will always refuse to accept the social status quo but there is a definite ceiling to how individual one can be in relation to the body economic: the marxist would suggest that so long as the mode of production is one of hyper-capitalism, what Sizek called "capitalism with Asian values" the individual will always be subservient the political economy which means domineering sexual exchanges. I see no evidence that this situation is not sustainable.

>>4376519
I think the latter scenario is more likely to occur.

Yeah, I know. Sex for recreation is the logical next step once the remaining stigma surround it and its forms breaks down, also once its power is stripped away, not exactly sure how that is going to occur, but I don't see how it will remain an effective weapon for either sex for much longer.

I can't believe /lit/ doesn't unanimously agree with this.

The worst thing a women can do is sleep with someone she considers less than herself while men are perfectly fine with doing that. This is why there is a larger ratio of women spread STDs compared to men.

There's only a small circle of guys getting any action. About 20% is the golden rule.

It is interesting at how complex the situation has become: the books on sexual tactics and sexual politics proliferate increasingly... the resources required for engaging in sexual conflict are increasing... I'm repeating myself here, but I want to be really clear that I do find the psychology of the current sexual battleground in relationship to the political-economy of the planet highly enlightening.

Enlightening for sure. I'll have to look more into this correlation, might be of use in order to understand sexual progress and where we're going from here. Like I said, I really don't think where we're at is sustainable. Something has to give at some point.

Are these posts some form of satire I'm too stupid to get, or are you actually trying to dress up one of the most obvious and tired observations about modern life ('modern' meaning the last half-century) by rephrasing it in the most meaningless words available in English?

What I meant to say is:
>In a hyperglobalized, neoliberal marketplace that has been established with the explicit intention of fueling conspicuous consumption and thus distributing intentionally superfluous and functionally obsolete consumer electronics internationally, the digital infrastructure will invariably serve the corporate interests that designed it. In order to create an artificial demand for devices and services, these interests appeal to Millennials' overflowing self-regard and paradoxically low self-esteem in order to mass-market their products as a means of intellectual self-actualization. As a result, the modern denizen of the internet feels compelled to phrase even the most banal insights as if they were to be carved in stone. Such is the troublesome hyper-verbosity of the post-buzzword pseudo-blogosphere.

I'm not mad, I'm just surprised that you completely dropped your casual tone as soon as you went from discussing scholars and writers to analyzing the history of pornography.

Was he actually dropping misunderstood theory or was that coming from you? sincerely or part of the joke? In case of the latter, "post-hyperrealism" is simulacra and >>4376516 is definitely not any example of biopolitics. I don't know if your point of the conversation was genuine because I think it's reactionary banal & unsubstantiated, simply claiming a generational decline. You're also ignoring the other forms of sexuality that arose with the internet, like the disembodiment of chatroom cybering, or the sexcam and the gif.

>You're also ignoring the other forms of sexuality that arose with the internet, like the disembodiment of chatroom cybering, or the sexcam and the gif.

Chatroom cybering and camming aren't types of porn, they're types of sexual activity, like mutual masturbation. Gifs are just a medium for porn like video, print, etc. and don't bring anything new to the table. Since the discussion has been about porn, none of that is relevant.

You can't argue there hasn't been an increased tendency in porn toward the more grotesque and "gonzo" aspects of sex in the past decade or two. Porn has gotten way more extreme. Or at least, extreme porn has seen a much wider audience, and this is absolutely because of the internet.

Whether this signals a major shift in society or not is a different matter, but it would be absurd to think there hasn't been *some* kind of effect from a culture where half of the male population or more routinely watches hardcore internet porn. I'm no puritan, but come on, people don't watch porn in a vacuum. These sorts of things change the sexual politics of an era, for better or worse.

>> No.4377315

>>4377299
Not him, but I agree wholeheartedly with your thesis. I've always been fairly puritanical though, so you're preaching to the choir in that regard.

>> No.4377376

>>4377299
I don't think there's any reason to separate porn and sexual activity, masturbation and 'mutual masturbation'. Is the line really so clear? Cybering is still porn, it's just performed in collaboration with its patrons, rather than performed once and centrally distributed. You still masturbate in private, if physical masturbation is involved at all. Sexcams don't involve you directly (except the ones that do) and would be porn except that they are performed live. As soon as the act is recorded, it becomes no different from any other porno. This doesn't mean that a new medium has developed sitting between porn and sex, or even that a bridge has formed that would make the two totally indiscernible. What has happened is sex itself has become augmented and complexified, achieving genuine disembodiment, often disidentification. Sex is not just responding to porn, but developing into and out of it.

>Cybering is still porn

No it isn't. Don't be daft.

And live cam shows are no more porn than a striptease is.
