So I just picked this up

I'm a couple chapters in, and it's pretty confusing so far, there are so many terms I don't know, and I have to keep flipping to the dictionary in the back of the book. It's very interesting though, and I want to see what happens next.

Is the Dune series any good? What about just the first book?

>> No.4364575

The Dune series is great so long as it's the ones written by Frank Herbert. You should skip the rest.

That's what I was planning on doing. I heard the other ones were pretty bad.

Now I feel kind of sad though, it was his son who continued the saga right? I bet he feels terrible that he couldn't live up to his father's legacy

>> No.4364583

read the second and third books if you like
dont bother after that
never touch the stuff his son and kevin j anderson have written, they are unclean

I hadn't thought of it this way before...

I want to read God Emperor of Dune.

It's just such a cool name

Read the first three, if you like how the third one ends then go for it.

I think God Emperor of Dune is where Herbert lost a lot of people. He started getting sloppy at this point in order to keep cranking out best sellers and didn't really expand on what made the first three good.

What is good about the first three? Why are they so popular?

They're just really good sci-fi. Dune is pretty hard to beat if you like Psychology, Politics, and space Muslims.

The 4th book is really strange, it doesn't pick up until the end. Most people don't make it to books 5 and 6 are much better.

>> No.4364738

I don't really like any of the books, and I'm not really in love with either of the films, yet I remain, for whatever reason, a big fan of the whole Dune "thing."

There's a glossary in the back.

I have had Toynbee and Spengler up my ass for a decade so discovering Dune was fucking incredible. It's like they're making out.

Yeah, he's crying into bags of money nightly.

I remember being a little confused in the first chapters of the book as well, specifically who exactly all the different factions were and what their roles were in the story. By the second half of the book you should be accustomed to everything going on, terms and factions and whatnot.

at least the invented words are kind of rare. reading A Clockwork Orange almost requires you to learn Russian.

Well, as with Tolkien, the creation of the setting to an extent stands beyond the characters/plot/prose. It doesn't need to be a great novel to appreciate the cool ideas.

Stick with it, the first few chapters are fairly gruelling. It gets easier. The prose style doesn't get any looser or more forgiving, but familiarity creeps in.

Yeah, that's very confusing. Who the fuck is the space guild? The great houses? And what does the emperor do? Fuuuuck
