AFAIK Ayn Rand isn't very conservative. She doesn't even like Jesus.

Orson Scott Card

I love Ender's Game and Ender's Shadow, but he pushes his idealogy so insanely hard in the others that I've sworn off them.

He has a gay character who essentially says "I'm gay but I need to marry because my function as a human being is to further my bloodline"

I'm no social justice warrior but it's pretty terrible writing

not the guy you responded to. I think your knowledge of the conservative has been colored by fox news. Ayn Rand's whole philosophy is profoundly anti-marxist/socialist and reactionary (and likewise as as unworkable and against human nature as those movements). It is an extreme libertarian conservatism in the same way that fascism is extreme statist conservatism. The American Christian Right are only conservative in that they are too reactionaries against Belloc's "Modern Attack" against traditional values, many of which have a basis in the Judeo-Christian moral system.

Speaking of Hilaire Belloc

"The Servile State" and "the Great Heresies" are two of the most conservative works ive ever read.

YOU DO NOT KNOW WHAT "CONSERVATISM" MEANS.

AYN RAND WAS NEITHER "CONSERVATIVE", NOR "LIBERAL"; SHE WAS "RADICAL".

"RADICAL": FROM PROTOINDOEUROPEAN "WRAD", MEANING "ROOT".

A "RADICAL" IS SOMEONE WHO ADDRESSES THE "ROOT"; THE ORIGIN OF THINGS; THE PRIME CAUSES RATHER THAN THE CONSEQUENCES OR SYMPTOMS.

The opposite, actually. I'm not even a Murrican so I tend to use 'conservative' (and 'liberal') more literally- as based around conserving something. I haven't actually read Rand but what I know of her suggests a radical more than a conservative.

You are a pseudo-intellectual. She isnt that complicated. She is a direct reactionary against communism (since the reds chased her fucking family out of Russia), hence a conservative. That she is a radical is irrelevant, as that is not a placement on the political spectrum.

If you are capsguy's new iteration, i apologize for being so disgusted by the faux intellectualism of your post. If you arent, I would recommend you give me the root of the word "cocksucker"

"radical" only denotes extremes.

...not saying 'conservative' doesn't have major definitinal problems, mind. It's a bugger of a word. In the UK Thatcher somehow made the 'conservative' in the Conservative Party mean 'unfettered free market capitalism', which is possibly the most culturally/socially corrosive force known to man, and really isn't interested in conserving much of anything.

I gotta recommend Edmund Burke, and Samuel Pepys. And also you migh want to look some of Disraeli's early fiction. Particularly "Sybil".

>the political spectrum
Whose political spectrum? It seems eminently possible to put 'radical' on a spectrum at the opposite end from 'conservative'. The former seeks fundamental change, the latter resists it. 'Radical conservative' is, I think, a contradiction in terms.

Example.

A religious man begins blowing up abortion clinics.

He would be a radical christian fundamentalist, hence a conservative

Another example.

A monarchist assassinates the socialist author of a coup-de-tat.

He would be a radical monarchist, hence a conservative

I think you'd have to consider Disraeli to be a radical conservative. Anyone who has read his fiction, or is familiar with his speeches and career can see elements of both. Also, Barry Goldwater's books are worth reading, as well as his own speeches and interviews.

You can be "radical" anything, my loud mouthed friend. It means root, yes, but more in the sense of "pure" Ayn Rand is a pure capitalist a radical capitalist.

Since today's society is capitalist as defined by Marx, she wants to conserve this, thus she is conservative.

That's why an-caps, libertarians and republicans make easier bed-fellows than the progressive liberal democrat capitalists.

You do need to read some conservative literature. Read some Disraeli, some Goldwater and some Lincoln. There's a lot more to it than just holding the line. it's more about maintaining the speed limit and keeping the seatbelts on than sitting still in the car.

The conservative defends today what the radical fought for yesterday, and what the radical fights for today the conservative will defend tomorrow. Both are contingent and relative. It is only the reactionary, the revolutionary conservative, that reaches beyond time.
