Recently, the folks in Texas have voted to change some things in textbooks, namely, leaving out Thomas Jefferson, hip-hop, latino culture, changing "imperialism" to "expansionism" and saying country music was a major factor in American culture, among other crazy shit.

I am fucking TIRED of people letting their idiotic politics run the country and influence the masses. This bullshit cannot go unpunished.

Anon is the strongest group I know, when organized. I know /lit/ isn't my personal army, but for the sake of history and knowledge, we need to skullfuck those stupid neo-conservatives.
(And for that matter, the Neo-liberals as well, although they aren't making our children's textbooks.)

So what the fuck do we do?

Texan here, I'm fucking thankful I'm out of the public education system because it's horrible here.

However, country music WAS important... to Texas, and the surrounding public states. Western swing was as big here as regular swing was wherever the hell you are, and Hank Williams was a HUGE radio figure when radio was all people had. Country music also tends to include bluegrass, cajun, and norteno music styles all of which are influenced by and have influenced the wider American musical heritage. It hasn't always been CMT and Kenny Chesney.

That being said, if they add something about country there needs to be an equally huge section about blues. The two are almost interchangeably linked in the southern american musical landscape before the 1950s.

Rallying teachers to the cause is the oly thing i can see working because "academics" and professors have zero cred. with the american public that isn't already outraged by this. Persuade teachers to get on the news, write blogs, facebook groups, to point this shit out. A public debate would be nice, but these fuckers would never sit down for that. Also, why the hell do politicians get to chose textbooks? Thomas Jefferson is the only really important part. "hip-hop" and "latino culture" are garbage that don't belong in a generally history textbook, archive that under sociology. There's political bias in everything. It's not like you can escape it. The people with the money have the influence and the power to publish. Everyone needs to just get over it.

Do I think that country music belongs in textbooks? Potentially, it depends on the context. I don't normally think of it as being important, but in terms of American culture it could be relevent. It's difficult to determine "what is American" now in terms of culture. Everyone automatically thinks capitalism, and everyone hates that and complains about it, but as soon as you include an important factor in the building of American culture, oh boy, that's wrong. Nobody's ever happy with anything. If you include more multicultural aspects in textbooks, then someone is bound to be unhappy that way too.

And no, I never heard about the sweatshops in any of my classes in grade school until I spoke with my husband-to-be about his experiences taking a New York City history class in college. For the record, I'm from the South and my fiance is from the North.

All right, bitches, it's time to get a bit of goddamn perspective about Thomas Jefferson. Was he a great man? Absolutely. Was he a pivotal figure in US history? Without question. Were his primary contributions the Declaration of Independence and the preamble to the Constitution? NO, NO, FUCK NO.

Jefferson's not a great man because he came up with some flowery phrasing when he was taking a break from banging his slave. He's not a great man because he sent Lewis and Clark on their way. He's not important to America because of the Louisiana Purchase - we would have gotten that one way or another.

He's great for two things he did for us.

1. DECIMAL CURRENCY. It took Europe, what, close to 200 years to catch up with that?

2. HE SUPERIMPOSED A FUCKING GRID OVER THE ENTIRE CONTINENTAL UNITED STATES. Ever look out the window of a plane and see how the farmland below looks like a checkerboard? Ever notice how all the streets in Denver are north/south or east/west and the blocks are 1/6 of a mile long? THOMAS JEFFERSON DID THAT.
