ITT: You post your face when history is considered a niche or quaint study and not the cornerstone of any examination of the human condition

How have we fallen so far?

History is important, but niche academic history isn't unless you're a history professor in that niche field.

I don't think anyone believes that an understanding of history isn't important for basic education, but the value of getting a bachelor's/masters in history certainly is a point of debate (unless you're going into academic research).

What I really want to know is how did the disciplines become so isolated? Whatever happened to learning history, literature, philosophy, science, political science etc as one inseparable discipline called "education?"

Hypothesis: Textbooks replaced source materials.

Because Americanism and late capitalism have shrouded the rootedness of the human condition with lies of freedom and the end of history.

Even Europe is losing its connection to the past. The rise of new populist Fascism on the old continent is symptomatic of this.

This is the face of the enemy.

It would be interesting to have a single curriculum that just included the most important books of humanity in chronological order or something. Like start with the Epic of Gilgamesh and just hit all the highlights on the way to the modern day. It would probably have to be pretty selective but could be interesting. I bet /lit/ could create a list.

But 'general' history (whatever that might be) is established by academic history.

Without the machinations of journals, archaeological work, and those niche theses and areas of study, you wouldn't have a 'general' history to work from.

I don't understand why people would go to school for literature/history when you could learn a harder science, get a better job, and spend your spare time reading.

History is important knowledge for a person to have but formal education in it is unnecessary.
