What makes a good essay about literature?

Additionally, does anyone know what are some 'must-read' essays on literature, or at least important essays to read on various literary works?

>What makes a good essay about literature?

Being concerned with literature as its subject matter.

>Additionally, does anyone know what are some 'must-read' essays on literature, or at least important essays to read on various literary works?

Yes.

OP was poorly phrased.
I'm looking for good essays to read about any specific text, and want to know what makes a good textual analysis.

buy a lit theory book, or a collection of essays if you're looking for stuff on a particular text.

James Wood is probably the best for OP. He's pretty simple (in a good way) and writes well, so he's a good way to introduce someone to criticism.

Guilty as changed. Still got him to apologize in his continued groveling for scraps of information, just through being an asshole. This is what /lit/ does to a person.

Yeah, this was a really useful intro for me. Wood wrote it with himself at 20 in mind. A time when he couldn't find the kind of literary "criticism" he was looking for. It's really reader-friendly and his passion for literature really shines through.
