>Jesus evaded the direct question put to him because it was a trap. He was in no way bound to answer it. He therefore asked to see the coin for taxes. And then said with withering scorn, "How can you who traffic in Caesar's coins and thus receive what to you are benefits of Caesar's rule refuse to pay taxes?" Jesus' whole preaching and practice point unmistakably to noncooperation, which necessarily includes nonpayment of taxes.

that was much later and pretty much just concerned him. His followers, however, in which they had no power, no strength and were completely at the mercy, where ever, they went of the Roman governors and their puppet rulers. If they had said or done anything that was too openly defiant of Roman authority or the authority of the Herodians, the centurions would have slaughtered every last one of them which they had done before when other "Messiahs" came around. Notice that Jesus for a good period of time, advises people not to tell others what they've seen him do or tell anyone who he is, not until the time gets closer to his crucifixion.

The question about taxes was a trick in order to get Jesus to say something that made it look like he was telling people the Romans were illegitimate or like he was inciting rebellion, so they could tell the Roman authorities and have his whole flock killed or imprisoned.

Pacifists don't reject violence because they care too much for themselves. They reject violence because they care too much for others.

Before him will be gathered all the nations, and he will separate people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. And he will place the sheep on his right, but the goats on the left. Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.’ Then the righteous will answer him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?’ And the King will answer them, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.’
>“Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. For I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink, I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not clothe me, sick and in prison and you did not visit me.’ Then they also will answer, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to you?’ Then he will answer them, saying, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to me.’ And these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”

>He's actually crucified within like a week for the rabble he caused in part by making that statement.

My understanding is that he's taken in for his growing popularity. But I digress, the problem with all this is that the four gospels show four different perceptions of Jesus tailored to four different types of early Christian audiences, not just of his nature, but his human character and so it's difficult to ascertain some of his politics. They've all just been edited together to feel more harmonious even though some of the differences are still there. Matthew's Jesus is much more of a Jewish prophetic figure, while Luke's is much more anti-Jewish. John focuses on Jesus as the incarnation. Mark's is somewhere in the middle of all these.

>> No.4266515

>>4266484

Well the historical view is that he is reported to Pilate for rabble rousing after he goes to The Goddamn Temple (not just a temple, the center of the Jewish world) and starts making claims about how it is being run improperly and how the leadership are hacks during the holiest of weeks. It's all ridiculous. From the outer mysteries of "Did historical jesus person who walked around approve of taxes?" to the whole inner mysteries "Is the father cosubstantial with the son, and is Christ merely a personification of an eternal deity who has existed since before the universe?" to the wishy-washy "It's all just a metaphor for self-sacrifice that everyone should practice for their community, duh!"

I mean, can we all agree to stop killing each other, work towards the success of the human race in the universe, and bugger the nitpicky dogma? Is that so hard?

Right, it seems like people throughout the centuries became enamored by the figure of Christ for whatever reason and then began to see their own reflection in the well. There are many interpretations of Jesus and people have generally picked the Jesus that reflects what they already believe and molding Jesus into that paradigm. Granted, this happens to some extent with any historical figure that people have come to admire. There will always be different interpretations of the character of certain prophets or kings of philosophers, but it seems to me like no one comes close to the scale of which Jesus is interpreted and has been interpreted for the last 2,000 years.
