As far as his easier, more popular writings are concerned, I'd recommend either Living in the End Times or First As Tragedy, Then As Farce (depending on whether or not you're willing to commit to something lengthy).

As far as his more serious theoretical writings are concerned, the place to start has always been The Sublime Object of Ideology.

The leap from the documentaries he's starred in to his books is pretty big, but try The Parallax View or Looking Awry if the film stuff is what interests you

Read Lacan and Marx first.

Be familiar with the basic works of Hegel and Lacan

I was going to mention that. He seems to talk alot about Lacan and some marx stuff and some Hegel I think. I'm pretty new to philosophy so I'll probably get into that stuff first.

I wouldn't say there's a huge need to, actually. He appropriates them and explains them, so what you're getting is really a Zizekified Hegel and Lacan. I mean, if you want to really dig in deep, you've gotta read them some time, but I wouldn't say they're necessary prerequisites to getting a handle on Zizek.
