>worst book covers
Any book that gets turned into a movie, and then the book art gets the movie cover

Pisses me off so much. I generally hate pictures of real people on the front of my books - the best for me is some kind of art, especially if it's abstract-ish that goes well with the theme

When I think of 'nice book covers' this is the one that comes to mind out of the ones that I own

Le Morte D'Arthur illustrated by Aubrey Beardsley is the most beautiful book I've ever seen. >Its nice when a cover has a simple in-reference. Like this.
the only problem with this line of thinking is that it only means something to the audience a book already has. Any book publisher will tell you they are trying to sell books to as many new people as they can- in references accomplish very little in that regard. And you're right, 'minimalist' movie posters and the like are way played out- mostly because 98 percent of them are garbage. I can think of only a few people who do them well. Most folks just drop an arbitrary set piece in the center of the composition and call it a day. How does that suit the material in the slightest?

The problem with so much of that sort of work is that it thinks it's much smarter than it really is. The pieces that result are less about the source material than they are about showing off how smart the artist is. Good for you, you churned out fifty posters and they're all ugly and they all look the same.

You can still do really good work in the 'minimal' or graphic vein, but, I think at least, that it should encapsulate some key element of the story, or some theme, or whatever. What is the book actually about?

Good book covers are also eye catching. They don't blend in with the rest. They should jump off the shelf and scream 'By Me! By Me!' Achieving this with class can be difficult.
