Probably The Broom of the System but it's also not exactly representative of his later, better work. I'd suggest reading Brief Interviews with Hideous Men and A Supposedly Fun Thing I'll Never Do Again and then deciding whether his authorial voice and concerns click with you. After that, you can read more essays and stories with Consider the Lobster and Oblivion, or jump right into Infinite Jest. I'd suggest saving The Pale King and his pre-Infinite Jest stuff for later, once you've already established that you're a fan.

If you want to dip your toe in the water with a single short story or essay, I'd suggest Good Old Neon (fiction) or A Supposedly Fun Thing I'll Never Do Again (non-fiction).

Currently reading A Supposedly Fun Thing

Honestly, it's fucking great.

I have not read Infinite Jest.

DFW can be...eccentric (>and but so), but I don't really get all the flak he gets on /lit/. Reeks of sour grapes.

He was obviously phenomenally talented, and from what I've read so far, also very funny.

Dive right in to Infinite Jest. It truly is a masterpiece of fiction and isn't really that difficult. Read at a pace you're comfortable with, use two bookmarks and don't give up when things don't make sense, it takes 300 pages or so to start coming together. When you finish read the first 20 pages again. Good luck and have fun, its a read experience like none other

a book is a pile of paper with ink scribbles or drawings on it.
an essay is a type of combination of ink scribbles that can fit inside a book.
