I steal poems from unknown poets to amaze hipster girls.

You're referring to HST's effort to retype The Great Gastby in it's entirety as an exercise, to get the true feel of it.

That feel, that elusive thing of texture and taste, hue and timbre of the work. How ... how ... how?

It's not so bizarre as it sounds, for a writer.

I've not tried it, but don't discount it. It's just this sort of quest, a seeking of intimacy with the language, with the words, that I keep hearing about from the writers who's works I love.

Maybe try a short story as an experiment of your own?

Had to hand-copy some short stories for class. It was dumb, but I guess I should have chosen an author with prettier prose.

Typing it would have made more sense, imo, as that is how most people write nowadays. Hand-copying only forced me to read it all over very, very slowly.

No, HST literally copied The Grets Gaby word by word to feel what's it like not to be a hack.

I have a published western novel that's an exact copy of a exceptionally great penny serial from 1879 that I found in my attic.

I'm really scared someone will find out and I'll be ruined

I guarantee you there is some old guy who likes reading those things, and has read the one you copied. He will happen upon your book, and notice it's the same and do absolutely nothing about because ninety percent of people won't.
