Im not exactly sure, but from what I can tell, its something like this.

There are normal belief structures, normal expectations of life and how good and bad it can get. Central beliefs are based on the enlightenment, with capital R Reason and Science giving rise to optimism about the human condition.

WW1 happens

People reevaluate their lives and existence, realizing that humanity as a whole is capable of horrific things on a much bigger scale than once thought. What follows is modernism. Essentially its looking for a way out of what lead to WW1. Modernism is critical of Reason and Science (among many things), because that led to WW1.

WW2 happens.

People reevaluate again, realizing that modernism must have been wrong. Essentially, the horrors of humanity are accepted rather than denied like in modernism. In modernism, ww1 was something that could be avoided, with post-modernism, ww2 affirms that this is simply how the world is now, and we must learn to live with it rather than seek some other utopia.

Also communism, imperialism, globalization, feminism, and rise of the digital age, though that last one might be part of whatever comes after post-modernism.

The main thing is that the romanticism and optimism that came from the enlightenment and the movements that reacted to it are gone

TL;DR the point of postmodernism is that moderism isn't the ultimate form of art, so thereby you can disobey the classic and modernist rules and still be considered great
