I've read a few of his books, and I couldn't figure out why he's so big.

Anyone care to explain what I'm missing?

Read some of his short stories instead, like The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber, I'm not a huge fan of his novels, though the only experience I have to make that statement is my reading of To Have and Have Not, but I enjoy many of his shorts.

From what I understand, his writing is acclaimed due to the factual, minimalistic style of his prose adopted from his career as a journalist. His ability to convey interpersonal conflicts through subtext, and of course his 2deep4u existentialism.
