I learn only what I can master. People who speak languages only to an average degree of competence are the scum of the Earth.

Whenever I hear people speak English with an accent or use awkward syntax I feel compelled to cause them grievous bodily harm.

mfw people say they can speak multiple languages but aren't fluent in them and realistically can only ask for directions and order coffee.

I'm almost perfectly quadrilingual.

Some people seem to find this an achievement, yet it seems pretty trivial to me as I grew up in a multilingual environment.

The number of languages you know has nothing to do with education... Or does it?

>> No.4224448

>>4224434

Language acquisition is one of the most rudimentary forms of learning. All it takes is time and repetition, and you will be able to converse fluently in any language you like. It apparently gets easier after the first ones, especially if the languages are related, eg. Latin, German, Spanish and French.

Now what you can do with these languages on the other requires some sort of education, whether institutional or individual. I doubt anyone writes good essays in any language without a solid background in literature and writing.

How do I to commit to repetition of language if I have no need to speak it on a daily basis? I find this problem to be difficult to overcome. I'd speak to myself and elucidate my thoughts but my family would think of me as mad.

I don't know what thy guy writing kyrillic letters said, but English grammar is simple as fuck. You don't even have cases or genera. Take "this" as an example: where in romanic languages you have to differenciate between four or more cases, all with different forms in singular and plural and everything in compliance with at least two genera, there's but "this" and "these" in English.

You're averagely fortunate.

I did use google translate for some of that, as it's been several months since my work in Italy, but with a few hours practice with a grammar book you can really be flying. There are not many irregular words in Italian and they really appreciate you trying to do as the Romans do.

Also if the english language wouldn´t have a germanic grammar system you could think it´s romance by looking at its vocabulary.

>There is no such thing as a difficult natural language, only one that is similar or dissimilar from your mother tongue.
This. All people everywhere around the world express (roughly) the same thoughts in (roughly) the same ways. The difference between the expressive power individual people's language skills is vastly huger than the difference between the expressive power of languages.
