Never seen a thread like this, so let's try it out. Have you read any Latin American lit produced in the 19th c.? Was it any good?

I'm about to try and read "O Alienista" by Machado de Assis (pic related) in its original Portuguese. Not sure what to expect, really.

nope. but if you want to extend this to early 20th, i loved a lot of the ultraists.

I've only read Bras Cubas and Quincas Borba translated in English. They were rather forgettable to me, but expect Maupassant's pessimism with a hint of the supernatural.
