Ive been reading through Iain M. Banks's culture series and have been lost in its universe for weeks now. anybody else read them?, or know where i could get digital copies of them all?

isn't there a sticky for this sort of thing?

also, proof there is no god: Iain Banks is dead, and Brett Easton Ellis isn't.

I don't get the hype behind Iain M. Bank. I've read both Consider Phlebas and The Player of Games; the first was shit, the second was pretty good but in both he just tries too hard to shock and his humour is really childish. I'll read Use of Weapons because that seems to be the one of his that everyone loves but it'll have to be much, much better to justify that praise.

Use of weapons IS much much better. Probably my favorite science fiction novel.

That said, if you don't like his tendency to try and shock the reader you might not like the ending.

Man, I liked Player of Games so decided to pick up Use of Weapons and was not impressed.

It wasn't bad, but those fucking tedious flashbacks and the shamamaalayan ending that was less surprising than a shit after coffee really made it average at best especially considering that there is no impetus given for the amount of change that would have been required to make it plausible.

I read the hydrogen sonata.. it was pretty boring, I dont really like the idea of ships with minds.

is it ever explained how the AIs are born/created?

Your hype gets exponentially larger when you die.

Blew through the first 3 in pretty short order, haven't bothered to continue yet.

He was hyped before he was dead too though. The only difference now is whenever somebody starts a thread about him, somebody will say something stupid about his death instead of talking about the books.

Use of Weapons is disgustingly good. Haven't read any of his other culture books, though.
