I need an especially easily-understandable and entertaining essay/article by Zizek to convince my writing teacher to use him in our class (basically she wants us to find an interesting cultural critic because she only knows of one and is looking for others).

Any suggestions?

If you don't know him well enough to come up with one on your own, why even consider him?

Dead languages? Alive on the Internet? Some say yes; others disagree!

I have read about 10 of his online essays but I'm usually very bad at recognizing general peoples' tastes compared to my own.

Okay well that sounds pretentious but what I meant was that I generally have very specific tastes and when I show people who otherwise are similar to me writing that I like they usually prefer other writing by the same author that I don't find as interesting.

>an interesting cultural critic because she only knows of one

reminds me of the fans of a certain cultural critic.

Zizek's written about a variety of cultural stuff. Any ideas as to what specific sorts of issues you want to see him comment on? And if you want one of his more popular essays, or some of his more theoretical work?

his reading of 300. entertaining. critical. no real art histoirical/narratological points though.

Wut. Dude is pretty high-profile (for an English-language intellectual) and widely known to be eccentric and fun. You're saying OP shouldn't suggest learning more about him because OP doesn't know enough about him.

If you can get your hands on a copy of First as Tragedy, Then as Farce, I'd highly recommend the "New Spirit" of Capitalism section as an introduction to his cultural critique. I did a quick google search to see if I could find it online, but had no luck—I'll dig a bit deeper, though.

Something that is a little more 'emotional' than his usual stuff, because my teacher is in to that sort of thing. Definitely one of his more poppy and engaging to the masses type of essay than his theoretical work. Something that would entertain the average liberal arts student that isn't a philosophy major.

Wow this is actually really good for what I'm looking for. Will strongly consider it. Thanks anon.

Page 51 in the book (or 56 in the pdf). It's fantastic. He takes on the way that Starbucks (and a million other businesses) try to sell you a happy conscience.

As long as you realize that he appropriates 300 here, he's not giving a reading of it in the sense of a proper formalist/narratological/semiotic reading. This is just Zizek being Zizek saying "bluh fuck capitalism," while at the same time being a complete sell-out.

Exactly, which is no way to approach philosophy.

He writes and speaks in English though, no?
