Hey guys, weird question, not sure if it belongs here... have you ever played a text adventure?

No.

no.

>> No.4155137

I write text adventures sometimes. They're really time consuming, but I would do them more often if they were more popular.

>> No.4155187

I've played visual novels, if that counts.

I doubt it belongs here, but I don't care too much. Anyway, A Mind Forever Voyaging was wonderful.

Ahaha, I've got the /vg/ general open in another tab. And I suppose there is a bit of a link: text adventures grew into early graphical adventures (Monkey Island and the like), and a lot of early visual novels borrowed some of their interface ideas from those adventure games.

yeah sure why not. Anything that jump starts the imagination I guess. My friends and I played katawa shoujo on a bus ride for a field trip once. It was hilarious.

I wish I was better at Zork, but I just can't wrap my head around it. The puzzles are difficult and I just felt confused. Maybe that makes me casual, I don't know. Also

No, they're fundamentally different. I'm not going to pass judgement on VNs because I've only played KS so I don't really have enough experience with them, but they really aren't the same thing at all.

>> No.4155265

I guess I'm going to go play Zork.
I have maps around here somewhere....

And yes OP, I did once and it was awful.

Not all text adventures are what one would consider great works of literature, in fact many are more about puzzles and item hunts or the standard "choose your adventure" book type fare.
But there are exceptions.
