It is the worst book I have ever read.

The hot-dog stand needs you Ignatius

>> No.4140367

The book is an offence to taste and decency and is indicative of the author's lack of theology and geometry

I finished reading it about two weeks ago.

Thought it was alright, the novel finishes strongly

but humor-wise I find Vonnegut waaaaaay funnier

It invented autism, so it has that.

I really liked it.

>> No.4141193

Good book. However I feel like there should have been a sequel detailing Ignatius's adventures in New York. I think the Toole must have planned a sequel but his suicide put an end to that.

the part where ignatius was berating and calling the children on TV whores was fucking amazing, so ahead of its time

I've only read Slaughterhouse-Five by Vonnegut, it was a good book but I didn't really find it that amusing (are his other books known to be funnier or something?)
On the other hand I started reading this on the subway and laughed like a maniac the entire ride, particularly when the guy in the bar makes that quip about how "your son delights in dropping bombs" or something. Never read it in public again.

Brilliant book with three dimensional characters that are impossible to mistake for one another
A true classic that I recommend to my friends

'The scheme was too breathtaking for the literal, liberal minx mind mired in a claustrophobic clutch of cliches'.

>> No.4142064

One of the Finest Novels I have ever had the Immense Pleasure of reading. Not since Camuses' Mersault has a protagonist had such a Profound Effect on readers.

We see a Genius and a Man of Proper Literature in every sense of the word dragged down by the squalor around him. We witness a Man who ought to be penning world classics forced into the position of another mere Capitalist Cog as he is forced to sell hot "dogs". Of course, hot "dogs" are really hot swine--and swine are precisely the kind of people whom Ignatius is forced to deal with. His struggle is absolutely Compelling and Heroic. The Betrayal of his own Mother near the end is quite possibly the most Soul Shattering thing I have ever read. To call the one Sane man in a Sea of Chaos, Improper Geometry, and Debauchery....to call such a man "crazy" is Tragic.

What "humor" people see in this Harrowing Account of a a modern day Hero of Literature is beyond me. Perhaps they laugh in Self-Defense. Personally, I cannot help but Weep.

The ending definitely redeems it, it was a great job of resolving all the separate plot threads.

Still, kinda homophobic in a really laughably and childish way which was kinda off-puting for some reason. The humor was super repetitive too.

Toole was gay.

Read his biography "Ignatius Rising". He used to bang random New Orleans sluts at his mom's house.
