How do I come up with good character concepts for a tight-knit group of spacefarers all working together? I'm trying to do something in the spirit of Firefly, SG-1, or Outlaw Star, but I'm having a hard time filling the ship up with a group that has synergy.

Are there any articles, tips, or other resources that can give me a hand with this?

Start with the ninja turtles.

No, seriously.

>leader
>nerd
>hothead
>comedian

Develop them into believable, interesting characters you can care about.

Then if you want, add a couple more peripheral characters.

This.

Base the group around archetypes (you can make your own, if you want) and base the characters around this model.

th humours.
and an idea; leave out an important job which no one quite fills and then don't fill it. that should be worth a few throw away lines, and a scene.
and consider why they are together and how proximity and personality form their relationships.
