What does /lit/ think of motivational books? I need some motivation but these books seem cultish. They all seem to have glowing reviews.

>> No.410051

They are based around brain chemistry and smooth talking salesmen.

Instant gratification. People like to think there will be any easy to solve their problems. I cant be fucked to go to work today I'll buy a motivational book.

Read this before all the Oprah crap and got into it, stay faaar away from it. Shit will make you insane

>> No.412435

Biggest scam out there. They're not designed to help people, they're designed to give the impression that what they say will help you, and then convince you to keep buying more of the author's products or attend his seminars to keep 'improving' yourself. There wouldn't BE a self help industry otherwise.

I looked into it, as I know a lot of people who like it. Once I started to read it, though, I slowly started to disagree with it more and more vehemently because of what I know about psychology. Namely, the book proposes that we "kill the ego" and "be the I"; to "not have the self" as it were. These are dangerous concepts, I believe.

The reason? The ego is a part of what makes us function correctly in our world. Without it, we would not survive any dangerous situations, because it's where our survival instinct (our confidence) lies.

I't just makes you apathetic, and the book is against thinking. So you just drone around while staying in the "now" while everything falls apart around you, wich eckhart says does not really matter. It's actually extremely nihilistic in a sense

>> No.412545

Anyone with their face on the front cover is immediately out. They're selling a false image of authority on the subject of yourself.

I think it's appropriate that the word "apathetic" contains "pathetic", don't you?

Because they are to be pitied ? Or because people without a drive at once point in their life are worthless scum that needs to be put down in your insane basementdwellers worldview.

Someone should write one of these books, but the only step is "write bullshit motivational book; cash in on losers".

Lots of people seem to hate "motivational" books. If you want something inspirational try Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway. Not bad for self help. Problem solving 101 and Back of the Napkin Problem Solving are fun too. You could also try out Malcolm Gladwell. He's not self-help or motivational, but he's very thought provoking.

from a glimpse you! might have seen "better than you", but there is no than, not even another word between them. what you saw is not what everybody gets from a glimpse but you specifically because you feel this book states that the guy is better than you, which he is (and he is total shit).
live with it, or don't, I don't give a shit.
