My advice is not to read it from start to finish, but to pick a chapter at random and see if it grabs you.

Comparing the two does not make a lot of sense. The movie has little in common with the book except for a few characters and locations. In fact only a few passages made it to the movie- and they are recited rather than dramatized/acted.

This is indeed how Burroughs suggest the book be read, in his 'Atrophied Preface'. The book itself was composed in this way.

Something magical.

Naked Lunch by William S. Burroughs, quite a good book.

I'm reading this now as well! Actually I'm almost done with it. It's something else.
