Name some great works about wars that take place prior to the 19th Century.

And please, for the love of Christ, don't name books that even a kindergartner knows.

I'll start by naming the Eagle in the Snow. It was quite good and has a pay-off if you're into Roman history, but I think it might be absolute shit to anyone that goes into it unknowing.

I'm gonna start off with the Masters of Rome series by Colleen McCullough.
She's one of only two female authors that I've ever enjoyed, and she's fucking amazing. Plot, exposition, style, dialogue, wit, humor, human relationships, geography, genealogy, culture, military, it's all fucking there.
Though out of all good authors I'd bet that women make up maybe 5 or 10%, Colleen McCullough is my number one.
Search for these books, fucking buy them if you have to, because if you love Roman history, they're a must-read.

Mary Renault to an ALMOST equal extent.
Fire From Heaven, The Persian Boy, and Funeral Games are great novels about the life of Alexander and the feuds and rivalries after his death.
The King Must Die is good too.

Steven Saylor gets an honorable mention, but the detail and immersion are just not felt in his works.

TL;DR: Any person who hasn't read Masters of Rome by Colleen McCullough can eat shit and die.

Oh yeah, this is a great read too. And not just that, it's a trilogy all about the Cossack uprising, and the Deluge and its aftermath. Great read.

OH GOD I'M SO EXCITED TO RECOMMEND THIS. Taras Bulba by Nikolai Gogol. Polish Empire vs. Cossacks.
