So uh... Was this supposed to be super-deep or something?

Everyone told me that this entire book was one huge mindfuck, but it was more like a shitty alternate history/detective novel that was really too long.

Am I missing something?

no I don't think you are missing anything

So... why do people think it's so great?

1Q84 is Murakami's worst book. Most people agree with your assessment.

Who thinks 1Q84 is great?

Pic related.

I like Murakami, but at the end of the day, he's not that special. He's what quirky young girls read to feel smart.

never trust anyone who says "mindfuck"

Duly noted, though I don't think that was the wording that was used specifically when the book was recommended by my cousin.

I'm interested in reading Murakami's other books because, well, if they're better and shorter I'm sure they're quite enjoyable.

It's probably for people who wouldn't like his best books..

the wind up bird chronicle is his best

I've only read "Hardboiled wonderland" and it was okay.

Did he originally write in English or Japanese? Are his books translated?

They're originally in Japanese. Supposedly his original style isn't that complex or anything so it translates pretty well.
