Which translation of the iliad would /lit/ recommend? I've got one in mind, but I'm curious about your opinions.

Quality isn't the only standard. Its a huge influence in western culture so I'd like to understand. I will read the quran for similar reasons regardless of its literary merits.

the influence of iliad on western culture is in its exposition of greek mythology which you can easily get from a textbook of browsing wikipedia.
it's a shit book. I don't give a crap about significance. I'm not trying to create a canon.

Bumping thread for interest. I've been wanting to read the Iliad. Is there not a Fagles version or is it just really shitty?

This is what I plan to read. I heard its one of the more faithful translations but still tries to be poetic.

Personally, I'd recommend the Fagles translation because of how easy it is to read. The Fitzgerald is the other authoritative text, though it's a bit older and drier.

Total moron. Iliad is still deeper than almost everything that came after it.
