Every time I go to B&N the classic fiction section is a ghost town save for old people, and most are in the DVDs section, the Starbucks with the pretentious panoply of authors on the trim, or in the YA/New Age type sections. Oh yeah the same thing happened to me. Then the weird guy behind the counter gave me this book, which I took to school. I ended up hiding in a storage room reading it all day. I thought the story would never end.

The weird thing was, the characters in the book started talking about me, and later TO me. I was freaked out at first, but by that point I was so into the story... and they really seemed to need my help.... Well anyway I ended up riding a magical luck dragon and chasing those thugs through the street until they all jumped into a dumpster! What a blast!

I haven't experienced that much happening in my library. I use the University library since i'm in a college town. Worst i've seen there is people who don't know how to use a card catalog.

The county library is a different story. I graduated recently and decided to get a library card at the county one (still have access to University one as alumni, but they don't have much contemporary stuff). NO ONE in the stacks, everyone at computers, mostly black kids, several watching Naruto.

I used to work in a library. The thing that pissed me off the most was that people would just yank books off a shelf and not put it back where it goes. At the very least, take it to the front desk if you're too lazy to put it back.

And yes, most people did come in to use the public computers. Not everyone has a computer and/or internet access.

I actually did go to my university's counselling service, but when I tried to explain how I felt he basically glossed over it and spent the whole session asking me question about how I felt about food and whether I was exercising (because I used to have an eating disorder, which I guess is now an indelible distorting mark on my medical history). I also saw another psychiatrist at a hospital in my hometown and the same thing happened. I have no problems with food and I don't exercise at all. Anyway, I've lost all hope in professional help.

It's starting to look like a christion science bookstore. And that one section is still expanding! Parts of it pop up here and there in all the other sections! There's enough inspirationals here to cover every conceivable Aramaic spiritual need and angle for half the state for the next millennium.

i live in philadephia. the main public library is full of minorities and homeless people but it is really very well stocked, looks beautiful and often has cute girls there studying or w/e.

As for buying books, the last half dozen I bought were on the street, an old man in his 40s or 50s has a stall right on front of the uni building, selling all sorts of books, mostly outdated textbooks but you find gems, like "As I lay dying", got it for less than half a dolar.
