He was a popular, even celebrated author, back in the 1960s and 1970s, then everyone forgot him. I'm told he had a medium-sized revival in the late 90s, but now NOGAF. Why not? He writes good, zeitgeist stories, that are dark and bitter enough to make most people happy.

I like Tao Lin too.

agreed, Yates is pretty good.
His reputation was totally destroyed by the book 'richard yates' by tao lin.

I might write a book called Tao Lin and name the main character Richard Yates, an elderly author made famous by a "self-consciously obtuse and lacklustre author", forced by his publishers to go out and perform readings of his old books which, reading them again for the first time in decades, have no effect on him. During his book tour he comes across the yougn author who wrote a book called Richard Yates and brought him back into popularity, and also meets up with old friends and an ex-wife, and by the end of the book on his last reading, he reads out a passage from the young author's book instead, and the crowd don't realize, and he feels kinda sad they don't and that they're only there having bought into the hype of him returning from obscurity, but he finally accepts that he's old, and goes back into obscurity reading his own books and valuing them again.

>self-consciously obtuse

It seems like none of Lin's detractors have actually read a line of his work. He is not remotely obtuse, fyi.

I'm fairly sure there's already a book called Tao Lin and also a book called A Book By Tao Lin that aren't by Tao Lin.
