I don't think there were a lot of shut ins back in the day because there was no internet and the only easy, passive entertainment people had was shitty TV. Instead of tortured artists being depressed in private, they were probably depressed in public spaces like libraries or saloons because they really had no incentive to sit at home all day.

Now you have the entire world at your fingers as you sit in your shit-encrusted ergonomic chair and argue with 14-year-olds on 4chan. You can stream TV shows or watch college dropouts play video games live, all while eating Cheetos and Doritos to satiate your depression-induced junk food cravings.
