How do I into John Fowles

>> No.4010984

Don't waste your time. I've found that he's really pretentious

Don't waste my time telling me not you waste your time before I've even read any of his stuff.

I thought this about The French Lefttenanants Woman, but I've heard better things about The Collector and the Magus, and so the former sits in my drawer right now, but I haven't read any of it.

Don't listen to him he's sending you on a wild goose chase.

Start with page 2.

>> No.4011027

The French Lieutenant's Woman if you like stories of people fucking up and don't mind the author talking to you directly.

The Collector if you like a main character who can go fuck himself.

Mantissa if you like unreadable wank.

A Maggot if you want intrigue and then a big reveal that you wish you hadn't read.

The Ebony Tower if you're after a overview of his styles. It's a couple of short-to-shortish stories and The Enigma is one of my favourite things to read when I'm feeling shit.

I haven't read the rest of his books though.

Thanks

I'll probably go for French Lieutanant's Woman or Ebony Tower. But I also hear that The Magus is good.

Don't start with French Lieutanant's Woman. I really liked The Magus, The Collector and Ebony Tower but FLW just irritated me. I think maybe you'd have to be a fan of 19th century-style fiction to appreciate it.

I'd recommend starting with The Magus.

I've only read The Collector, and it was very smooth read. Finished it in a day (because it was so good).

tfw you couldn't finish the magus after two serious attempts
feels pleb man. I just couldn't take all the intrigue and layers of deception

Same here, I have a few others on my shelf that I never got around to reading but I loved The Collector and re-read it often. It's an easy read, so probably a good way to start.

>I've only read The Collector
You still have The Magus to read for the first time, you lucky bastard.

>tfw you can never have your first read of The Magus again.
