Is this the best Lovecraft Collection?

Does /lit/ not like Lovecraft?

this is a very slow board, you'll have to wait much longer than 8 minutes

No.

Get the three Penguin volumes.

I've seen that book in a bookshop and checked it out. The paper sucks and the selection didn't strike me.

Go for the Penguin books, go in order. They've ordered them in a smart way: you get a bit of every "cycle": Poe, Dreamland shit, and Cthulhu Mythos.

I'd go with The Call of Cthulhu and Other Stories, then the rest in the order they appeared in Penguin books.

You won't go wrong with these, but be warned, you may dislike the dream stories (I hate them).

Is it his complete works or just a "best of" collection? Because if it isn't the former, then there's no point in buying it.

I know your imagination is sometimes the best device for horror but i find that he relies on it a bit too much. With the pay off at the end of his stories often being "No, its horrible i couldn't possibly describe it, it's really really gross and oh god my eyes"

Well, I for one don't read his stuff for the horror. He has an interesting setting, though, so trying to piece together what is actually going on in the greater scheme of things is whats fun for me.

It's a selection. Shit one at that.

Dear Satan,

Literature, specifically horror literature, will always have this forte that it can use words to go beyond words. Yes, Lover does it often, but that's kind of the idea too. The unimaginable will always be scarier than the imaginable. It's an interesting area beyond the unknown: the unknowable, of which you can see a little bit...

Hah OP I recently bought just that collection. It's the only one I found, actually. I at first kinda wanted to make a necronomicon myself. Print out all the stories on A4 paper, sort it, bind it with some tough leather. Sear the words NECRONOMICON on top. Sear in H:P. Lovecraft Collected Works or whatever. It would be howdydeedleedangdingbangbong rad.

But yeah, no. It was the only one I found on cdon.com. I think there mighty be some obscure Lovecraft short stories missing. Or some of his many letters orsomesuch. Everything significant he ever wrote is almost sure to be in there though.

Actually, there's two volumes with Necronomicon being the first. I think that together they are complete. I like them, true the paper is a bit thin but still. I also have the conan volume that I think is the complete howard tales.
