I read the first 100 pages and it was awful. I didn't like this guy's style at all. Could you give me some fantasy books that were written by an author that could actually write?

I understand the paradox, but I haven't lost all hope yet

The standard defense of Gardens is that it's weaker than the rest of the series by a league or two. Press on, and you're likely to find a pretty good series. If you're not interested in pressing, best abandon ship here.

I found Zelaszny's crap surprisingly readable.

His style doesn't change, but the plot and all of that becomes comprehensible after this book. I know that is the same thing you read all of the time, and maybe you're getting tired of being told to "press on." It is true though.

So if you hate his style, stop. But if you just hate the plotting and all that, keep going. The series opens up soon and you'll be treated to a phenomenal fantasy saga.

Also, nearly anything by Guy Gavriel Kay is worthy of your time. "Tigana," and his new novel "River of Stars" are quite good.

Ursula Le Guin's Earthsea and Annals to the Western Shore. If you read French, La Horde du contrevent by Alain Damasio and Gagner la guerre by Jean-Philippe Jaworski.
