that sounds great, man. I'm going to Amsterdam for the second time this year with a few friends next week, then after that I'm travelling to Thailand with my family for two weeks. Then I'll have to work a little so I can get enough money to go to Ecuador, where I'll live for 5 months and upon finishing my voluntary work I'll travel Latin America with my leftover money. I've already been to Bolivia and it was fantastic so I'm really looking forward to this. I'm not really sure what to study but I'll probably end up doing a mix of psychology and economics or psychology and design. As preparation for my Abitur I pretty much did nothing but lieing outside, getting tan, getting high and reading.

thanks, but it was mostly luck. for instance I was lucky enough to have Biology and Chemistry as my major subjects which have always been easy for me, and physics as minor subject really saved me some credits as well... also, the text in the German A-levels was Kafka. seriously, I would have failed anything else.

G8 kind of shat on me, having to take Maths and German really, really blows. I got 13 and 14 in my oral exam and 12 in English (embarrassing, I know) so if I coulda picked some subjects I was actually good in for my last two I would've had that beautiful 1,xx. Kafka woulda been really cool. Sadly we had some rather unknown novella by Schnitzler and I did mediocre.

I'm not involved in this discussion at all, but I agree with you. School is not about intelligence, it's about performance. You don't have to be smart to study shittons and get good grades. The thing is though, if you're not retarded you should be able to grasp the importance of education and of your finals and study accordingly. G8; I don't know if it's really so bad, I mean for us at least the last two years (Kursstufe) was the same, the only thing was that we did years 5-11 of G9 in classes 5-10 in G8 so that the Kursstufe (11 and 12) wasn't affected by the higher concentration of learning matter.

The only thing I loathe is having to take maths and German for the a-levels, I don't mind spending one year less in school at all. 12 in English is kind of bad for me since I've always had atleast 14 orally, much like in every subject. I don't know why my written works never end up being as good, guess I'm just not a good writer. For written english we first had a listening exercise which was pretty shitty because you never understand anything they're saying (not because of dialect or anything, sound quality was actually horrible), followed by a translation of a relatively challenging text and then topped off with a composition (I forgot how many words you're supposed to write but I wrote about five or six pages iirc).

but: German wasn't that bad in BaWü as there are 5 different tasks from which to chose only one, and usually everyone has a favourite in there anyway - for me obviously Kafka.

Maths - yes, a lot of people aren't good at it and it's kind of unpleasant for most people to take in the A-levels. fortunately, I'm not one of those people and started studying around a week prior to the exam.

I think it's quite good that literature exams are compulsory in the Abitur. as far as maths is concerned - I don't have trouble with it but I've seen it ruin some very promising GPAs.

Here's a nice fact you guys probably don't know: apart from your GPA, your grades in respective classes don't mean jack shit. Once you get to college, they pretend and act like you are all clean slates who need to be taught again from the ground up.

Naturally, you can test out of some of it, but not all of it. That is, they don't give a shit if you got a 3 in Biology. Or a whatever in Calculus.

If you're really worried about your grades, just interact with the teacher more about things outside the subject, or hell, even ask short question(s) after class about something that you talked about in class and you'll be set for a nice average grade -- worked like a charm for several of my classes.
