Filum Latinum!

Quid legis?

Per Plautinas comoedias pelligo. Versutae, ut Plautus diceret. Vero salsae, "inest lepos ludusque". Amphitryone perfuncto, in Asinariam profectus sum.

Nullum opus est Latine scribendo. Me paenitet errorum barbarismorumque.

I'd like to learn latin. Maybe I'll take it while I'm at college.

How long, approximately, would it take someone learning Latin through self-study to be able to read the easiest classic Latin texts?

Depends really heavily on the student. But I think you could do it inside a year without major problems, if you were really serious about it, and especially if you have a talent for languages.

I'd say roughly 8 months. Without working yourself to the bone but definitely spending at least 30-45 minutes a day. I recommend Orberg's Lingua Latina.

Typical Plautus humor, this is what the Romans thought was funny lol (probably would be delivered by an actor with all the right intonation):

Leonidas: iubeo te salvere voce summa, quoad vires valent!
Libanus: gymnasium flagri, salveto!
Leo: quid agis, custos carceris?
Lib: o catnarum colone.
Lib: o virgarum lascivia.
Leo: quot pondo ted esse censes nudum?
Lib: non edepol scio.
Leo: scibam ego te nescire, at pol ego qui ted expendi scio:
nudus victus centum pondo es, quando pendes per pedes.
Lib: quo argumento istuc?
Leo: ego dicam, quo argumento et quo modo.
ad pedes quando alligatum est aequom centumpondium,
ubi manus manicae complexae sunt atque adductae ad trabem,
nec dependes nec propendes quin malus nequamque sis.
Lib: vae tibi!

Leo: I great you with the loudest voice, as far as my strength allows!
Lib: Greetings, playground of the whip!
Leo: What's up, guard of the jail?
Lib: O chain-farmer!
Leo: O pleasure of rods!
Lib: How much do you think you weigh naked?
Leo: Fuck if I know.
Lib: I knew you didn't know, but I who have weighed you do know. Naked and tied up you weight a hundred pounds, when you're weighed hanging by your feet.
Lib: How do you figure?
Leo: I'll tell you, how and in what way I figure. When an equal hundred-pound weight is tied to your feet, when your hands are shackled and you've been led to the post [i.e. for whipping], you neither swing too low nor too high to stop you from being a bad and awful person.
Lib: Fuck you!
