Not this. You can't just tell someone that they should write poetry first—as if poetry, having shorter lines, is simply a seed that grows into prose. If many cases, poetry is carved out of prose.

It obviously depends, though (both on the kind of poetry and the kind of prose). Personally, I could never appreciate or write poetry until I got a better grasp on the beauties of proper prose.
