What's the point of reading anything that's not non-fiction?

>inb4 I read for entertainment

>> No.3821919

Because fiction has the potential to change your worldview. It has for me multiple times. I'm a significantly happier person than I was a couple years ago.

>>3821919

but you could just read a piece of non-fiction which changes your worldview in the exact same way without having to talk about it in a roundabout way

>> No.3821947

How do you know the non-fiction you read isn't actually fiction by another name?

>> No.3821952

>>3821928
Why do you place value on talking with others about texts? Isn't it enough to interpret the text itself?

And why would it be roundabout if the other person had read the same text? I don't think you've thought this through.

Because non-fiction is the sign of the utilitarian plebeian, who needs to justify time spent reading with the accumulation of capital.
Fiction is for Pleasure, and signifies that you have the wealth and individuality to pursue your leisure with Class and Intelligence.

I think As I Lay Dying is a much more thorough exploration of Being than Heidegger's opus.

>> No.3821976

OP why would you want to limit your thought to only what's happened before now? No theoreticals, no new thought or scenario, only ones that have happened before, you're seriously limiting yourself.

Snooki's 'Confessions of a Guidette' is non-fiction. Sorry, I don't see your point, OP.

Look, OP, I'm just like you.

You're the dumbest person on this board.

I'm being harsh. Most annoying would be accurate though. What a stupid argument you're posing, what does it matter where an individual attains his world view?

I agree. I think that all facts should be compiled into one large all-encompassing list for everyone to read. That way we can get straight to the point. Wait... remind me what the point is again, OP. It seems you're confused. You're mistakenly comparing fiction and non-fiction as if they're supposed to fulfill the same role. Think of them instead as separate sets of tools. One set's function is different than the other's, though that's not to say there isn't some overlap. Some fiction can perform the same function as non-fiction, and vice-versa. For example, you can expand your vocabulary reading either. But, if your purpose in reading is to explore an imaginary world so as to escape reality, fiction is more likely going to do the job.

I guess we have to discard movies, television and video games too. No fiction allowed, only real things for real people like me.

We also have to discard role-playing games, songs with lyrics, and pictures that have been photoshopped.

Fiction reveals the author's (and, in the case of great fiction, mankind's), feelings, values, fears, hopes, and other conditions. Non-fiction reveals the author's ignorance and propensity for obscuring what is and was for his own self-beneficial fantasies. So, fiction can tell the truth while fiction tells lies.

>> No.3822460

It's simple: if someone were to say so and so is true and here's why, I'd understand them on a theoretical level; but if someone were to say so and so is true and then proceeded to SHOW me why, I'd relate to the idea through a more human and emotional prism, making it more likely to alter my worldview
