I don't get it /lit/. How can something that is essentially meant for children be considered pretentious?
If anything its cleverness and meta humor can be more appreciated once you reread them as an adult. Did you guys never read this as children? Is that the problem you all have with this series?

not sure where you're getting this, op.
i liked them way back when.

The series was good for me until Snicket started to make the siblings do superhuman things.

Although you could argue that this is just an account of what happened, and could be great exaggeration of what really went on.

I'm pretty sure the series is excellent...

It sucked. I got to read the series up in years, so that my aging brain could appreciate its suckiness.

I enjoyed them at first but... I just do not enjoy a setting that pours out such misery on the characters. I know "that's what the series is about" but they were never books I ever, ever laughed at. Coincidentally, Kafka Komedies are rather lost on me.

I don't speak for all of /lit/, but I really enjoyed the books. It has been years since I read them though. Been meaning to start again.

>> No.3823415

They were so dull
Especially as the series went on and he started wiping every page with the dick-cheese from his erection for totally unnecessary world-building and "character-development"

>> No.3823426

I always wondered how this series ended. I read up until I think the 10th or 11th book (All I remember is it being cold and the baby almost dying)

I heard that its a non-ending. Also I had all the books but most are irreparably damaged due to me being a stupid teenager.

They get shipwrecked on an island and Count Olaf dies after a change of heart where he becomes a nice guy, then none of the mysteries built up over the course of the series were resolved.

At least that's what I remember happening, it's been awhile since I read these books.

they really need to redo the movies

they could've fleshed it out more

To be fair I don't remember much about it except that Jim Carrey was great.

>totally unnecessary world-building
implying this wasn't the best part
I loved these when I read them. The amount of references I'm still picking up on today is incredible.

aww fuck.

I just started reading this for some reason and have all the books on my kindle. That shit sounds like a dealbreaker but I'll probably keep reading anyways...

Great. Spoiling a kids book.

There are more books being published, like prequels and shit. I saw one of them at Safeway the other day.
