Damn, that's a nice phrase. Evokes so much with so little.

What've you read that's stuck with you? Source as well if it's not a famous quote.

My absolute favourite: Job 38:1-7

1Then the LORD answered Job out of the whirlwind and said:

2 “Who is this that darkens counsel by words without knowledge?
3 Dress for action like a man;
I will question you, and you make it known to me.

4 “Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth?
Tell me, if you have understanding.
5 Who determined its measurements—surely you know!
Or who stretched the line upon it?
6 On what were its bases sunk,
or who laid its cornerstone,
7 when the morning stars sang together
and all the sons of God shouted for joy?

A woman mimics her own reflection.

Art creates, science destroys the sensory world; that is why the artist is erotic and sexual, the scientist asexual. Optics destroys light.

Every true, eternal problem is an equally true, eternal fault; every answer an atonement, every realisation an improvement.
There is no such thing as chance. Chance would be a negation of the law of causality, which demands that even the temporal meeting of two separate causal chains still has a cause. Chance would destroy the possibility of life . . . It would nullify the connectedness of things, the oneness of the universe. If there is chance, then there is no God.

I am never able to comprehend why I committed the original sin, how the free could become unfree. And why?
Because I can only recognize a sin when I am no longer committing it. Therefore I cannot comprehend life so long as I am living it, and time is the mystery because I have not yet overcome it.

Among the notable things about fire is that it also requires oxygen to burn - exactly like its enemy, life. Thereby are life and flames so often compared.

Is the ocean due to the rivers, or the rivers due to the ocean? Who would decide that? So is it between God and man. The ocean wills the rivers, the river wills the ocean.

How does resentment feel? It feels like unfairness, injustice. It directs the gaze outward, to protect one from dwelling on the flagrant lack of power which led one to feel resentment in the first place. It is not the Other that is causing the resentment, but yourself, and all resentment does is protect you from this painful realization, which would be otherwise added to the already unbearable pain of the resentment's cause.

Just as ships have a life raft, and spaceships in the future will have an escape pod — both of whose purpose is to allow the occupants to get away in case of an emergency — so too decadent religions have the soul, and for the same reason.

They call it Greek mythology, but for the Greeks it was a religion. In the same way, one could speak of Christian mythology, and then the comparison, even on purely aesthetic grounds, finally appears in all its monstrous proportions, to the extent that even a distinction such as aristocratic versus plebeian flagrantly fails to do it justice. In the Greek religion we see the most fascinating and seductive tales of higher beings making war and love and all the rest; in the Christian one some ruffians in a desert praying for bread.

People these days know the price of everything and the value of nothing.
I knew a young lady of the last "romantic" generation who after some years of an enigmatic passion for a gentleman, whom she might quite easily have married at any moment, invented insuperable obstacles to their union, and ended by throwing herself one stormy night into a rather deep and rapid river from a high bank, almost a precipice, and so perished, entirely to satisfy her own caprice, and to be like Shakespeare's Ophelia. Indeed, if this precipice, a chosen and favorite spot of hers, had been less picturesque, if there had been a prosaic flat bank in its place, most likely the suicide would never have taken place.

A piece of writing from Thomas Ligotti.

Though I should say that I didn't read this piece at first, my first exposure to it was in a Current 93 track I heard. Yes, "that one".

"There are no means for escaping this world
that penetrates even into your sleep
and is its substance
you are caught in your own dreaming.
Where there is no space
and are held forever where there is no time.
You can do nothing you are not told to do.
There is no hope for escape from this dream
that was never yours.
The very words you speak are only its very words
and you talk like a traitor
under its incessant torture."
-Thomas Ligotti

When I first heard the line "the very words you speak are only its very words" it hit me in a weird place. The more I thought about that line later on the more it broke my fucking mind. Still does.

For some time now the impression has been growing upon me that everyone is dead.

It happens when I speak to people. In the middle of a sentence it will come over me: yes, beyond a doubt this is death. There is little to do but groan and make an excuse and slip away as quickly as one can.

At such times it seems that the conversation is spoken by automatons who have no choice in what they say. I hear myself or someone else saying things like: "In my opinion the Russian people are a great people, but--" or "Yes, what you say about the hypocrisy of the North is unquestionably true. However--" and I think to myself: this is death.

Lately it is all I can do to carry on such everyday conversations, because my cheek has developed a tendency to twitch of its own accord.
