What are /lit/'s thoughts on war novels, science fiction or otherwise? Though I'm digging Haldeman from the first few chapters so far, I've yet to find anything on a non-fictitious conflict very interesting save Hemmingway.

I really liked The War of the End of the World. Probably one of the most memorable books I've read if not one of my favourites. It's about an anarchist/libertarian Catholic insurgency in Brazil after emancipation. Now I want to reread it, but the book got water damaged ;_;

Also the ending of the Forever War really blew my mind. My friend who recommended it didn't like the ending but for some reason it got to me.

The Thin Red Line is worth a read - Evelyn Waugh's Sword of Honour trilogy is excellent (if not exactly action packed). Marlantes's Matterhorn might be what your after - For me the best I've read is Life and Fate.

I just started The Forever War, I have high hopes for it.

Might be old news OP but have you read Starship Troopers? It's an interesting read... probably too much focus on the military if you ask me, but still good.

I liked The Naked and the Dead. Mailer was awfully young when he wrote it and it shows. But it's probably his most ambitious work, and as a guy with a more-than-passing interest in World War II it's really fascinating to hear his side of the story - so bitter and young and pissed off. It's not what you'd expect from some kid just back from the Philippines.

I know it shouldn't have bothered me but I found all the Fug and Fugging jarred me right out of the moment - almost made me want to hack an e book to fix
