Google Nabokov. That one. Read that one, then repeat.
I really liked Despair, you should try that. But also Laughter in the Dark and Pale Fire (of course) are worth your time.

(right now there are 3 Nabokov threads on the front page. I couldn't be happier. )

>> No.3739160

I've been wanting to read this book for a while, I've never actually done it, is it over rated or is it actually good?
I tend to do a lot of my reading in public, I hope I don't get weird looks from people (not that I care) if I do read it in public.

not at all, i mean that if someone was scanning along my shelf, see lolita 'oh, its a oretty horrible fucked up idea, this Humbert taking this nymphette on a fuck tour of USA, but maybe he just appreciates Nabakov's prose' and then see the collector next to it 'oh okay.. he reads stuff about a freak fawning and then kidnapping and keeping a girl in his basement... is anon researching for his future?'

Ada or Ardor man! It's my favourite Nabokov i think, and so appallingly under-read

Well, you could ignore the annotations if you think reading 'the original first' is important; then alter you will already have the handy annotated version on your shelf... As to why you should read it: If you're not a literary genius, you are going to miss references and shit. Plus, it is really well done (at times)

In my opinion, this is the best-written book I have ever read. And that makes me sad. Nabokov had a mastery of the English Language that far surpasses mine. And it wasn't even his first language, either. I just doubt that I could ever write as well as him.
