Any time I find myself about to play a video game or watch a movie, I realize that whatever I'm looking for I could find much more effectively in a book. Be it story, characterization, or atmosphere, I know that even a mediocre book will do it better than the best piece of passive media.

I've become "that guy"
When people try to talk to me about their favorite TV shows or movies or video games, I ask them why they don't just read a book instead. If ever I am invited to watch a movie with someone, I just feel like I'm wasting time.

Is it possible to truly enjoy, appreciate and "get" literature, if you're still indulging in lesser media?

A picture is worth a thousand words. You probably just haven't watched any good movies.

I know that's not true, because I used to really be into "film" and even the ones that I know to be objectively good still don't reach the same levels as a book. They simply can't, the medium doesn't allow for the same depth and complexity.

Inauguration of the Pleasure Dome

Travelling Players
Man With A Movie Camera

Go ahead and tell me Stan Brakhage or Mekas or Chris Marker or some other shit compares to the greats of literature.

Not him but I agree with him and just want to name drop films.

To each his own, I guess. I'm still a much bigger film buff even when I've started to read hell of a lot, I still get more out of good films. Maybe I'm more visually/aesthetically minded.

movies are not necessarily passive. many require a lot of mental activity from you in order for them to be explored with amplitude. some ask you to fill plot holes or use simbolism in different manner, etc. they also require speed and accuteness on your perception in order not to disturb their temporal line (the speed in which events happen and the order in which they are to be seen to follow it as the directors would like you to). You need less speed in your perception in the case of movies, and more visualization in the case of literature. simple as that. a passive/active dichotomy is absurd

meant to say "you need less speed in literature than you do in movies"

I think a lot of the anxiety over enjoying a wide range of media comes from this fear. I think this is why so many people dismiss anime and videogames off hand, because they don't want to feel like they're "wasting their lives," because we all only have a limited time to live and enjoy consumer culture, and some people will spend a good portion of that time defending what they do with the rest. Music and movie review sites exploit this, and it also gives rise to the patrician/plebeian dichotomy. It's ridiculous. You're never really "patrician" if you have a wage job and only dedicate a few hours a day to your hobbies, and thus have to defend how you spend those hours. That used to be one of the main perks of having money.

Why don't you appreciate different mediums for different reasons?

You're very vague in describing what makes books superior to other mediums, simply stating that they lack the complexity and depth of literature really doesn't help convey what you're trying to say.
