That cover is fine. Honestly abstract art covers on books are the absolute worst 90% of the time. I wish all publishers would just slap nice classical paintings on the cover instead of trying to be 'modern' or whatever the hell they're thinking.

What, this one? This shit looks pretty awful to me. At first I thought you meant "abstract" in the sense that Pevear/Volokhonsky translations have an "abstract" book cover design. I find geometric figures and the like to be pretty pleasant to look at.

>>3731440
I don't know, I'm a fan of simple covers. Sometimes the classical paintings are nice, but most of the time I don't think so.

abstract art, I mean, so therefore the picture you are showing would be the one I am talking about

I just think it compliments the book a lot, from what I know about it. Better than this fucking piece of shit

That's the Portinari Altarpiece you cretin, have respect for real art.

>>3731454
That's Hugo van der Goes, the artist, portraying himself as one of the ugly, somewhat goofy shepherds who are stricken by the birth of Christ. It is particularly relevant because it serves as a sort of precursor to the ideas of "instant revelation" attainable by anyone as was seen a few years after its painting, in the Protestant Reformation. I don't know if that plays into the novel at all because I haven't read it but that's what it is.

a little better than abstract art, I think

I guess also wikipedia says it's organized like a in three parts "like a triptych," which is pretty relevant because the Portinari Altarpiece is a triptych?

I agree that it doesn't really help someone who isn't an art historian, which is a pretty shitty way to design a novel cover. I definitely think it'd be a lot better if they showed more of the work, as you said, because even van der Goes didn't want you to just focus on this oaf.

I do like my Penguin Classics of Juvenal's satires, though, it has a fresco of some foppish Roman copping a generous feel of some naked chick's boob.

B-but you haven't read it yet...
I like your cover better than the penguin one, which is what I read it in. The penguin one maybe is more evocative of the NYC segments of the book, that kind of busy urban drift, but that's really a fairly small portion of the book...the real heart of it is more to do with that look of horror at transfixed insight on the face of the man on your cover.

This has to be one of the worst I've seen recently. The horror's all in the words but it spreads from them and pervades the entire cover...that glow around the letters, that alignment with the line of the window, the typeface itself... blegh.. it's sad because the typeface along the spine is great...if they'd just deleted the titling from the cover and used only the spine's everything would be fine.

They're obviously trying to trick vapid, media-obsessed twats into buying their books. I don't know how they hope to benefit by doing that, though. It's not like some tween is going to buy the book based on the cover and read past the first two pages.

I hate when I get something from amazon/abebooks and it's not what I ordered (especially when it's a hardcover missing the dust jacket). I have the edition that you got in the mail and like it more than the edition you wanted, but then again it really doesn't matter, what's important is the text. Having said that, I'm still hunting for the first edition hardcover copy. One day I'll get there.

More importantly, this is a fantastic novel, IMO one of the best in the past 60 years. You'll love Gaddis, and after this read JR (which might be the better novel, and is hilarious). I envy you for reading this for the first time.
Enjoy!
