let's have a comics thread.

Jimmy Corrigan is so good and it makes me angry when hipster faggots who have hipster friends pretend like they understand the depth of this masterpiece.

But the cursive font in the grandpa parts are impossible to read so I just mostly looked at the pictures during those parts. Feels bad man

>But the cursive font in the grandpa parts are impossible to read

That's a relief, because I was thinking it was maybe the fucking size of the image.

Can you do me a favor and look it up yourself and tell me if it is readable or not. Am I the only one having this problem

From jimmy corrigan to From Hell is the natural progression of comics thread.

>they say this book is a masterpiece
>every character looks exactly the same
>it is impossible to tell who the fuck is who, especially the prostitutes

other than that pretty cool book, and you can distinguish characters after the 2nd reading.

The only difference between those hipster faggots and you is that they have hipster friends while you have none.

"Hipster-faggots." Excellent. You've managed to simultaneously disregard Chris Ware's impact in the alternative graphic novel industry and negatively generalize his entire audience while giving no rationale. All because you can't read cursive. Fuck off.

>> No.3727524

>>3727423
Chris Ware is a one trick pony over-hyped by hipsters, an entire generation of people incapable of having literary discourse worth any genuine merit. You should feel bad for appreciating hipster pandering crap like Jimmy Corrigan. You're no different than a hipster.

>Hating Jimmy Corrigan because it is like by "hipsters"

I don't get your guys' reliance on that word. Sure, there are lots of young pseudo-intellectuals that misinterpret works of literary merit, but stereotyping an entire piece as "hipster" is fucking asinine because you don't have to give any reasoning for why it's bad. Why's Jimmy Corrigan bad? It's hipster. What's hipster? Who gives a flying fuck?

>> No.3727580

>>3727565
It's not the young pseudo-intellectuals that bother me, it's the elitist ones.

ware is probably the most technically accomplished comics artist working today, but he tells the same needlessly unpleasant, trite, self-pitying story over and over again

>> No.3727599

>>3727524
The joke here is that there has never been a generation capable of having literary discourse worth any genuine merit; there are exceptional people, and there are those who fail to try. Men and supermen, excusing the patriarchal term (and fuck you if you're about to cry 'feminazi' there). If you can understand and appreciate fine lit, great. Others are trying to. Help them, don't judge. Our generation is not exceptional in its mediocrity. If you want to have literary discussions, force books on your friends, never stop talking about lit. Give your collection away. Truly listen to what they have to say, and critique it fairly. You are the one keeping yourself from being part of a crowd of finely educated people. Try harder, pleb.

I almost bought Jimmy Corrigan on free comics day, but it seemed kind of tryhard (tho I know that's part of maximalism or whatever) for being almost $40. I only skimmed though it, so I think I could get into it if I just spent more time on it.

I bought Goliath instead, which is by that guy who made the "proper literature is just jealous of mah sci-fi jetpack XD," but it's really good and really depressing, in my opinion. It's very "low-key" and other hipster buzzwords probably

That post didn't imply that, it basically said Chris Ware's work, including Jimmy Corrigan, is a fucking pile of shit with no literary merit whatsoever.Jimmy Corrigan doesn't have merit. Morrison's role on it gave it life in my opinion, he can be too mystic at times and naive about philosophical stances but he brought something new to the medium. I don't remember the name of the author that came after him. She did some nice things too but she really pushed her feminism into it and that ruined it for me.

I think charles burns and jim woodring are the only fantagraphics published artists, besides their archival collections (ie krazy kat, peanuts) I've found worthwhile. I downloaded a couple chapters of Corrigan but I found the sincerity boring, the humor indulgent and most probably importantly, the length daunting. it failed to catch my interest. And when I saw he did that absolutely tasteless cover for some edition of Candide, along the lines of Jason's Dharma bums, I lost whatever respect I had for him. I think his work fits along the taste of someone reading Asterios Polyp and that one with the birds and astronauts and Daniel Clowes. I'm not interested, D+Q disgusts me, that standard spectrum of "taste" produces a strong feeling of psuedo-intellectuals/hipster-not-hipsters/ya college liberals trying to posture the comic medium to where they think (because they obviously have no idea) constitutes high art. I don't know if you fall in line with that but those are my thoughts. I don't follow comics that closely and haven't kept up with any recent releases, but I like CF, Chippendale and Negron.

>> No.3727816

>>3727796
read both corrigan and polyp. hated the first. the second is not perfect but it's not bad either. it uses good technical tools to express, the message is sincere and the only pretentious jokes are made by the character that is pretentious. point of the comic being that his pretension and his lack of understanding of other points of view is preventing him from living his life. The other comic is self-pitying and self-indulgent.
