pic for what i write with in my notebook. no smudging, good ink distribution, good line width, takes a while to die, fits well in the hand, cheap.

thinking about switching to the bic atlantis because they are also very good and i am partial to pens that retract, but they only come 2 to a pack which is disappointing. since i am on my last round stic (the box has lasted a long while), when it finally dies i will most likely switch to the soft feel retractable.

Well, ignoring saving electricity, because I also think that's a shit argument, it is true that it doesn't need electricity, so you can use it anywhere, it can't shut off, lose data or not support the file type.
You can't be distracted by applications or the internet, you can't go back and spend 3 hours fucking around on one paragraph, choosing a font or page layout.
There aren't any annoying ads flickering in the corner (fucking thank you, Word fucking 2010), you have a direct hard copy, so you have a concrete result for your effort, and not just a word count or a tiny scroll nub.
Then there's the actual feel of typing, which, straight up, it's pretty awesome.
A good analog typewriter will last for fucking ever, and they're cheap as shit off of ebay, see >>3722162
The ink bands are still sold in stores, so that's not a problem, and they're cheap too.

If all you're doing is writing, the only real downsides are that they're fucking heavy and that it'll have to be transcribed, although now they have that "reading" technology, so I don't even know how long that's going to be a problem.

Why would you do that? I write on looseleaf or in one of the millions of cheap journals/notebooks I have laying around, and then I use the computer for editing. It's much nicer that way, because writing on looseleaf forces me to focus on actually writing instead of over-editing (at least, over-editing too early) and dicking around with the story, and transcribing it to my computer forces me to think about the story and edit it.

Although I will readily admit that beyond that there's no real concrete advantage besides having a back-up medium for your work in case your hard drive shits itself.

I feel like I'm spending too much time repeating myself, but there you go. The only unique and valid reason behind typewriters are "I like the way it sounds." At least admit that it's the only reason instead of coming up with a bunch of bullshit that holds better for notebooks than typewriters.

Just because a pen and a typewriter have the same advantages doesn't mean the typewriter is invalidated. If that's how you're going to do it, I could just as easily say pens are stupid and nobody should use them because I hate using them because they make my handwriting look like ass and they keep getting lost.

Okay, I apologize for the eat me comment, I got excited.

"The pen does them better" is your opinion and you're using it as a fact.

What you're saying is basically "they both do the same stuff, but I like pens better, so pens are objectively better."

When I'm on the go, my only criteria is "it writes" so I use pens just as often as pencils, but when I sit down and have a choice, I really dislike pens in general. I don't like the way my handwriting looks, I hate the way you have to scribble to get ink flowing in the cheap ones, or the way the ink sometimes blots. If it's not the cheapest ones, I can't fit them behind my ear, either.

But I was never even arguing which ist the best medium to scribble shit out, I just said the typewriter has still has advantages. It's ability and quality hasn't gotten less since laptops came along. When I'm sitting at home, I will always choose the typewriter over anything else.

Ah, so your pens aren't wearing out? They're just running out of ink, and you have to throw them away?
Which leads back to my original comment
>just get yourself one good pen that will last
and you can understand my confusion at your rejoinder
>You don't write very much do you?
because you see, I do in fact write by hand quite a bit, but since I use quality writing instruments which can refilled once the ink runs out, I haven't in a long long time used a pen so much that I've been forced to replace it with an entirely new pen

Yeah, using Record players is almost as retarded as using typewriters

I say almost because there is a perceptible different in the output versus that from a digital file, whether it's increased fidelity or just the eccentricities of the player is beside the point.
Is there a difference in the words you produce whether they're typed on a typewriter or on a computer?
What's your argument for using a typewriter?
Is it the sound? Why not just get a clickity-clackety keyboard for your computer?
Portability? Your old friend the pen offers the ultimate in that regard. And just how portable is a typewriter anyway, you're not exactly going to be lugging it out of the house very often are you?

>Is there a difference in the words you produce whether they're typed on a typewriter or on a computer?
What does that even matter? The answer is yes, by the way.

>Why not just get a clickity-clackety keyboard for your computer?
>paying money to buy a novelty trinket designed specifically to imitate a sound made by a machine that was designed to write things and costs about five bucks.

>Portability?
Yes. That's the first thing that comes to mind when I consider what I want to write on when I'm in transit.
No, idiot, I keep it at home. I have a typewriter at home to write on and a small journal in my coat for when I'm going someplace and think of something unbelievably clever and artistic that must be recorded.

I know this concept might be a bit out of your grasp, but I enjoy writing on a typewriter more than I do on a keyboard. I like to have and do things I enjoy. Bizarre, I know.

I am also the opinion that something I enjoy should be enjoyed to the fullest extent. If I'm sitting at home, and I'm going to do something, I'm going to do it fucking right.
That includes optimizing atmosphere to peak comfyness, selecting a tool that is both physically and functionally appealing, pouring myself a drink with enough alcoholic content to get me drunk faster and writing utter gibberish that sounds like it's supposed to mean something, but doesn't. Because I like that too.

Thinking of getting a Lammy Safari(the greenish one; generic black ink) as my intro to the world of fountain pens, but I'm concerned my cursive is shit. Am I making a mistake? Different pen?

>> No.3731887

>>3731835
If you're interested in improving your cursive, there's a decent amount of resources out there. If you have the time you could try picking up the Palmer method, which is basically writing cursive using your forearm/upper-arm and shoulder instead of the wrist so you can write for hours without getting sore if I'm remembering right.

I'm also interested in getting into fountain pens, so hopefully somebody has some good advice for us.
