Was honestly a little disappointed with Consider Phlebas.

What's /lit/'s take on it?

>> No.3658203

I felt the same way. It had all the typical problems the majority of sci-fi writers face, great concept but underwhelming execution.

Fuck, I miss being 13 and getting smashed in various parks on cheap 3ltr bottles of cider and horrible cannabis resin.

Fuck yes. A bottle of Frosty Jack's or White Lightning can only be appreciated in a park at age 13.

"A Little"? This shit was just some trashy pulp novel, with not much redeeming qualities.

Some people say his other works are better, but I seriously doubt it.

Yeah, those were truly glorious years. Do you remember this?

"Scuse me, sir. err, if I give you the money ... err, could you go in and get a pack of sovereign and two bottles of Strongbow. You can keep the change."

Every single night.
If it was a guy asking, it usually took about 10 people. If it was a girl asking a random guy, they almost always agreed first time.

I'm looking for a good sci-fi series to get into, do you guys recommend this series or another one?

>> No.3658422

so are the other culture series books worth reading?

The problem with the space opera genre is that it was born out of shit and never rose above it.
You have Ender's Game, but that's about it.

Use of Weapons and Excession are both brilliant. I've heard good things about Player of Games as well, but haven't read it.

It has so much damn potential though.

I won't argue with that. I fucking love Star Wars and the whole idea.
The grand, epic scale. I love it.
The genre has been dormant for too long.
But at this point I'd say postcyberpunk has more of a future than space opera, and that just fucking started!

I'm with those who didn't like it- didn't actually finish it. Felt like one damn thing after another- a succession of wacky events one after the other, like hitchhiker's guide but not funny.

Wasp factory was cool though, and I did quite like a culture short story that I read so maybe the series gets better.

Damn. Sums up my opinions on the books exactly.

Oh and player of games is a great read. I'm actually glad I read the books in that order since I still liked phlebas and it only got better after that.

Can't wait for hydrogen sonata

I tried to pick up "Matter," but couldn't get past chapter two. I got the feeling it was part of a series?
