Is this book actually good, or is it something that makes soccer moms say it changed their life ala The Alchemist?

>> No.3633096

read it anyway.

Something in between. Good up to the ending which is really shoddy work.

So many things to read and you go for A Life Of Pi. Cheap Philosophy.

This. Really cool story with a pretty cool idea. Then everything gets all surreal and pretentious.
"Which story is real?????"
Hint: its the one without magic

My complaint isn't the message it's portraying but the manner in which the twist is revealed. It ends on pages of exposition which just seems clunky and lazy.

The Life of Pi isn't bad, but it's not great either.

I was annoyed as fuck at the beginning, because Pi wouldn't shut up about religion, and I kept agreeing with everything his "evil" father was saying, but once the ship sunk all that faith crap came to a stop and I found it an enjoyable story of survival, until the twist. The twist is just stupid.

But this was over eight years ago when I read it. I saw the movie shortly after reading the book "In the Heart of the Sea" which is a true story about a shipwreck, and the authenticity of that story really made The Life of Pi seem contrived and childish by comparison.

did it cross your mind that maybe it wasn't supposed to be a gritty tale of survival?

Yeah, The Life of Pi totally is not a story of survival. There's a chapter entirely dedicated to Pi cutting up a sea turtle for food, but that wasn't about survival, it was about something else. The majority of the book definitely isn't about Pi trying his hardest not to die.

This book and its blurb.
While it isn't shit, its definitely the exact opposite of what I look for in a novel.

dream sequences are for fags

>> No.3633425,1 [INTERNAL]

I know you said dream sequences are for fags, but I think it could work. We all gotta dream, don't we; not just fags? Oh, by the way, I don't think they like being called fags anymore, I think, now a days, they prefer homos.
